Observations

I'm a member of the baby boomer generation.   I grew up with the notion you went to school, met a man, married, lived happily ever after.  There was the implied "the man is in charge" rule also.  Then I left Iowa and joined the real world.  I'm one of the lucky ones - I did met a wonderful man (after a few bad ones) and married him.  But he hates to travel.  The wanderlust in me insists that I travel.  My husband encouraged me to travel.  "go- have a great time - I need a break too!".  I had trouble believing he really meant for me to go.  You know, he says that but he really means I should stay home with him.   One day I just decided to take him at his word.  That was my first trip overseas - to Scotland.  I went with a girlfriend from Montana.  I had a great time!  I suffered only a little guilt.  After the third phone call home my husband said "stop calling already!  this is costing a fortune and you are ruining your trip worrying about me.  have a great time honey, i'll see you at the airport".

So off I went!  The first trip to Greece I went with my sister.  The second trip I traveled with my best friend, Richard. The third trip I went with my girlfriend, Lisa.  I have traveled stateside alone.  The key to traveling alone is preparation and ensuring your safety.  Check out my how to pack page for preparation information.  Safety - research where you are going, talk to people who have been there, check out the various list sites and get other peoples opinions, stay at decent hotels and trust your gut.

On this page you'll get to see some poetry and photos.  Also check out the stories page.

Greek Men
The young, the old, the cute Greek men

Christos with his beautiful smile everytime I appeared

Costas with his long dark hair, his caressing eyes searching mine

Gus with his wicked charm and desire to dance til dawn

Yanni full of music and the need to share his song all night long

Dimitri telling stories of ages long ago comparing me to the goddess Eros

Ah, Greek men

Nobody told me

Nobody told me there’d be so many damn mosquitoes here in Greece

they forgot to tell me lots of things

that marble over 2000 years old is really slippery when you walk on it

that Sunday nights in Athens are just like any other night and not the day before Monday

that if you squint your eyes while at the Acropolis you can almost see Aristotle or Nero, and you can surely feel them without squinting

that you really can float in the Aegean Sea

that a lot of the islands don't have fresh running water and brushing your teeth in saltwater is quite an experience

that a Greek cigarette at 7 p.m. right after your nap while drinking a glass of retsina is the best cigarette of the day

that I'd miss Greece so much

  WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES

When I close my eyes
It’s your crooked smile I see
It’s how your eyes droop a little
The way you hold a cigarette
The way your hair curls on your neck
How you don’t tuck your shirt in
And the watch on your arm

When I close my eyes
I hear your lulling voice
telling me how the world began
Or why the Aegean Sea got its name
Why the Greeks are great
Or how you love the way
the shadows play across my face
Or wondering why I’m not kissed more
because I kiss so good

When I close my eyes
I feel your hands
Grabbing my head to kiss me
Holding my hand so I don’t fall
while walking under the stars
On my lower back arousing senses long thought dead

When I close my eyes
I feel your lips
Searching for my passion in a kiss long lasting
On my hand to tell me of my beauty
Three times on my cheeks,
The European way, you say
One sweet last time
On the corner of my mouth
To say good-bye

MEDITERRANEAN MAN

You talk to me of ancient kings and lands that once began
Of places swallowed up whole by the Aegean Sea
Leaving only the barren tops for a new life to begin

You speak of stars and moons and dreams only seen by us
And let me listen to the waves come quietly in

Oh conjure up Atlantis please and Neptune from his bed!

We can lie under the tree saying not a word
Perhaps to kiss my ear
And hold my hand
Caress my throat

Inhale the coriander breeze
