Observations

Kauai

I stayed at the Kauai Inn Resort in Lihue - where John Wayne and the cast of Donovan's Reef hung out!    Step back in time to the Hawaii of yesterday.  Tucked away on three tropical acres were the Nawiliwili Bay meets the Huleia River, this charming 48 unit plantation style Inn was the first on Kauai and retains a 'sleepy old world charm'.

The picture to the right is of Nawiliwili Bay which I could see out of my room's lanai.  Below is a shot taken from the road on the way to the hotel.  The flowers grew on the trees around the hotel.  The picture with the cars is taken from the parking lot!

Hulemaiu Road
Lihu'e, East Kauai

This ancient Hawaiian Fishpond can be seen from an overlook on Hulemalu Road. Legend states it was built by the Menehune, leprechaun-little people, in one moonlit night. Archeologist date the pond to pre-Hawaiian times, around 1,000 years ago.

The fishpond fronts the Hule'ia Stream. The wall between the pond and the stream is 900 feet long - an engineering marvel considering when the pond was built. Today the fishpond is privately owned and is no longer in use.

www.hawaiiweb.com provided these stats. My hotel was just 'down the road' quite literally.   The rooster shot is taken from the overlook area.

Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge

Encircled by waterfall-draped mountains, the picturesque Hanalei Valley on the north shore harbors the Hanalei NWR. The 917-acre refuge was established in 1972 to provide habitat for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds, including the Hawaiian stilt (ae`o), coot (`alae ke`oke`o), moorhen (`alae `ula), and duck (koloa).

The overlook where the sign is, is right across from Princeville shopping center.  They call Kauai the garden isle and these pictures show that.

Hanalei Bay Beaches

This shot on the left was taken early one Sunday.  There are actually 4 beaches in the 2 mile horseshoe shaped bay - I believe this one was the Waikoko Beach.

This is a shot taken from Kuhio Highway heading north.   If you're interested in that highway visit http://www.hawaiihighways.com/photos-Kuhio-Hwy.htm
