DO’S AND DON’TS

MONEY

Have a safe place to carry your money. Your purse, your wallet in your back pocket, a backpack – these are not safe places. They can easily be stolen. You can buy a fanny pak you wear under your clothes. Keep your credit card, traveler’s checks, and a copy of your passport in this. It’s okay to put small amounts of money in your pockets or purse. That amount should be only what you can afford to lose or get stolen.

Money. I recommend using your credit card or debit card. Most banks around the world now have ATM’s. If you use traveler’s checks, keep the stubs separate from the check. Also keep a copy of your passport and a keep of your traveler’s checks at home. If you lose them, you can at least call for the numbers. I get about $50 worth of foreign currency to carry with me before I go. You may need it to buy food or catch a cab when you get there.

PEOPLE

Talk to people. Ask them lots of questions. Have coffee or a meal with the locals. Find out how they live. Enjoy their company. Having said that – don’t go to non-public places alone with a stranger. Use your common sense.

Be nice to your bartender and waitress.  They will make sure you have a good time.  Tip them well (most people don't).  Ask them lots of questions, most of them are locals.

LANGUAGE

Try to speak a little.  Pick up a book with common phrases.   Use it.

TRANSPORTATION

Use public transportation – for the experience alone. Most places have maps and information. Grab some and have some fun.

WHEN TO GO?

May, June, September, October are probably the best months to go.   You'll miss the summer scorching heat.  In September and October the tourists have gone home and you'll spend more time with the locals.

TELEPHONES

You can get your own cell phone to use while in Greece.  They do have phone cards you can buy there, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.  I recommend contacting :

GreeceTravel-Phones
Karamichos-Mazarakis
31-33 Voulis st
Plaka, Athens, Greece
Tel. (301) 322-4932
Fax 324 9104
E-mail: blakjohn@athena.compulink.gr

You are not charged for incoming calls.  People who call you pay the normal rate for a regular phone call to Greece. (For example: AT&T charges 27 cents a minute)  There are no extra charges for the caller. No roaming charges whatsoever inside Greece.  Your phone comes with guided tours from popular sites. Let's say you are in Delphi. You dial a number and you are guided through the ruins by an expert!  You will receive your phone number before your departure, so you can leave it on your answering machine at home. You can pay in advance by credit card or by check which entitles you to send the names and numbers of 12 people you want programmed into your phone.( We will teach you how to add more later if you need to) or you can pay by cash or credit card upon delivery or you can just stop in our shop when you are in Athens.  It costs $150 including $20 outgoing phone time (and battery recharger).  When you are done, they will buy it back for $50!!
